Young, Moran seek U.S. action to protect Hong Kong refugees fleeing China

Following recent actions effectively ending Hong Kong’s autonomy from China, U.S. Sens. Todd Young (R-IN) and Jerry Moran (R-KS) requested that the U.S. administration work with its allies to help protect any Hong Kong refugees fleeing China.

“While evaluating next steps for a broader response to the evolving situation in Hong Kong, we must recognize the immediate concern that some Hong Kongers are no longer safe living there and are seeking refuge outside of the region,” wrote Sen. Young, Sen. Moran, and several colleagues in a June 9 letter sent to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

“As China becomes increasingly assertive, we must provide an alternative for those who desire to live in a land that shares their democratic values, protects human rights, and upholds the rule of law,” wrote the lawmakers, adding that they stand in solidarity with Hong Kong people trying to flee Beijing’s oppression.

The lawmakers also urged the United States to “work arm in arm with our allies to find a solution to this challenge.”

“Now is the time to send the message to the Chinese government that the United States stands with those who believe in basic freedoms, democracy and human rights,” the senators wrote. “During these critical times, the United States must explore new avenues to support those who share our core values of freedom and democracy.”
