Cole, Womack, Wenstrup cosponsor JUSTICE Act

U.S. Reps. Tom Cole (R-OK), Steve Womack (R-AR), and Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) are among dozens of original GOP cosponsors who on June 18 unveiled a bicameral bill to improve and reform the nation’s policing practices, accountability and transparency.

“I firmly believe the overwhelming majority of law enforcement officers are brave and honorable people,” Rep. Wenstrup said. “However, recent tragedies involving George Floyd and others have only highlighted the need for refined standards and the continued pursuit of equal justice in our country.”

“Clearly, there is an important national dialogue on the issue of police reform underway,” Rep. Womack added. “The noble aim of that discussion is to produce a police reform package that will enhance the professionalism and transparency of community policing while increasing the confidence and security of every citizen, particularly those living in communities of color.”

Reps. Cole, Womack, and Wenstrup joined bill sponsor U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber (R-MN) to introduce H.R. 7278, which would improve law enforcement transparency through additional reporting; ensure law enforcement agencies and officers are held accountable; and improve training for officers, according to a bill summary provided by the lawmakers.

The bill also includes provisions addressing historical racism and racial inequities, according to the bill summary.

“While much of this work needs to be done at the state and local levels, there are steps we can take at the federal level to provide our localities with resources and guidance helpful in preventing injustices,” said Rep. Wenstrup.

The congressman in separate statements also expressed their support for law enforcement officers.

“The overwhelming majority of police officers faithfully and bravely discharge their responsibilities, and no one resents a bad police officer more than a good police officer,” Rep. Cole said. “Unfortunately, there are a handful of officers who abuse their positions. We clearly saw such a case in the horrific death of George Floyd. Sadly, there have been other examples as well.”

Rep. Womack pointed out that law enforcement officers are rightfully expected to uphold high standards of integrity and commitment, but said Congress “can’t turn a blind eye to those who’ve abused their authority.”

“I recognize that others have and will produce worthy proposals for consideration,” said Rep. Womack. “At the end of the day, I hope we can find a bipartisan compromise that can pass both chambers of Congress and be signed into law by the president.”

U.S. Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) on June 17 sponsored the same-named companion bill, S. 3985, in his chamber.
