Tillis reiterates U.S. support of Western Balkans, Brussels during trip abroad

U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) recently concluded a bipartisan congressional delegation trip to the Western Balkans and Brussels where the lawmakers addressed numerous issues, including support for the region amid Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

“I appreciate the opportunity to hear from leaders of these countries and relay to our colleagues in Congress the importance of supporting our partners,” Sen. Tillis said on April 25.

Joining Sen. Tillis on the trip were U.S. Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Chris Murphy (D-CT), who during their visit met with government officials in the countries, members of civil society and members of the press. Other issues discussed included anti-corruption efforts, democratic reforms, youth engagement, and safeguarding freedom of the press, among others, according to information provided by Sen. Tillis’ office.

“Last week, I was proud to visit Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, and Belgium with Senators Shaheen and Murphy to deepen existing cooperation with our partners as Russia continues its illegal war against Ukraine and threatens our NATO allies,” said Sen. Tillis. “The Balkans region is critical to Europe’s security, and as co-chairs of the Senate NATO Observer Group, we made it clear the United States is committed to Europe’s sovereignty during these uncertain times.”

Sen. Tillis and his colleagues started their trip in Serbia, where they encouraged officials to continue the country’s transatlantic journey toward membership in the European Union, according to the information.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the senators met with government officials and leaders to discuss the deteriorating political situation and pressed for election reform ahead of October elections, and also attended a Youth Engagement Reception.

In Kosovo, Sen. Tillis and his colleagues discussed securing peace, prosperity and independence for the nation and visited Camp Liya, which houses Afghan refugees.

The delegation concluded its trip with a visit to NATO headquarters in Brussels to encourage NATO allies to prioritize peace and stability in the Western Balkans and reaffirm support for a strong and robust NATO amid Russia’s aggression, according to Sen. Tillis’ office.
